Ed is a former firefighter turned financial advisor turned marriage and family financial therapist and he knows a lot about walking into high-intensity situations, navigating “the flames,” and walking everyone out safely. In this episode, I talk with Ed about his journey to becoming a financial therapist. We also cover the importance of tuning in to listen to yourself instead of succumbing to the noise of others, understanding that our relationship with money is evolving, and the importance of reinvesting--literally in an index fund and in our professional and personal lives.

The three takeaways from today’s episode with Ed are:

  1. Listening to yourself instead of outsiders. “You’ll cap your income,” or “people will never pay” to “I can reach more people,” “this is what I need to thrive.”

  2. Our relationship with money is lifelong and evolving. It’s important to understand that we have an ongoing relationship with money. Ed talks about using attachment theory to help him understand different types of relationships with money, including anxious and avoidant.

  3. The importance of reinvesting. He talks about the importance o investing financially in our businesses, in our personal finances like in an index fund, and in ourselves; be it rest, hobbies or something else.
