37: Get Uncommon with Alyssa Adams
Dr. Alyssa Adams speaks to the importance of doing therapy uncommonly. For her, that means using intuition, somatic practices, and helping other therapists think in an outside-the-box way. This isn't something she inherently knew--she was an academic researcher before starting the Uncommon Couch podcast--she learned it over time.
Here are this episode’s takeaways:
Increasing Income. Alyssa covers why she thinks a key to balancing her relationship with money is about bringing in more money, not just spending less.
Holding space for multiple identities. Why it’s important to lean into various parts of ourselves. For example, not just looking at herself as a therapist, but also as an intuitive healer, a person who loves true crime, a runner, and “the Office’ fan.
If it isn’t working, investigate it! If you are trying something new, say, a new spending plan, rather than get irritated and throw everything out, Alyssa suggests investigating it! For her, that means pausing, curiously looking within, and checking in with her body and intuition when something feels off. She also shares the importance of looking to others’ way of doing things as a way to see how things are possible. She cautions us against comparing ourselves to others.
